The Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to explore other options rather than the use of force against Boko Haram insurgents, Daily Sun has revealed. “Visa Denials For Nigerians Increased In 2018” – US Data Reveal

When compared to the figures released for the 2016 and 2017 fiscal years, the data reveal visa denials for Nigerians surged in 2018. For the last fiscal year 2018, a total of 143,783 non-immigrant US visas were issued to Nigerians. In the 2017 fiscal year, the figure was 168,980. In 2016, a total of 179, 145 Nigerians were granted different categories of non-immigrant visas to the US. When compared to the figures released for the 2016 and 2017 fiscal years, the data reveal visa denials for Nigerians surged in 2018. Data for 2019 has not been published but there have been lamentations from many Nigerians about high rejection rate since the beginning of the year. Federal Government Restricts Sale And Use Of Sniper

The federal government yesterday placed a restriction on the sale and use of the fatal agro-chemical product, Sniper. Since Sniper hits the Nigerian market, it has become the favourite of most Nigerians, especially the poor for killing mosquitoes and other pests. Similarly, the product has found its way into the hands of youths, who have continued to use it to commit suicide. In recent times, several Nigerian youths have committed suicide at the least provocation including failure in examinations, jilt by loved ones, using Sniper. It is against this background that the federal government yesterday directed that the product be withdrawn from the open market with immediate effect. Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has denied a recent comment attributed to him on the controversial topic of the commission’s server. INEC’s current chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has faced public backlash over claims that the commission does not have a server where it electronically collated results for the 2019 presidential election. The commission crowned President Muhammadu Buhari winner of the February 23 election with 15,191,847 of the total votes cast while his main opponent, Atiku Abubakar, gained 11,262,978 votes. However, in a petition filed before the tribunal, Atiku and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed that he actually won the election with 1.6 million more votes than Buhari according to an internal compilation of results he claimed was obtained from INEC’s server. The management of Kano Zoological Garden has denied that the millions of naira stolen from its coffers were swallowed by a gorilla. The managing director of the government-owned zoo Mallam Umar Yusif Umar said it has no gorilla and that money was stolen by burglars. “ I was called midnight on Sunday 9th, June, by the head of security that armed robbers burgle our office including the revenue office,” Umar told The Guardian. “About 6.30am, I left my home for the office and immediately I arrived I met my office and that of all the directors opened. “Instantly I called the DPO, Sharada police station and reported the case to him. As far as I’m concerned, I suspect theft and nothing close to Gorilla.” Umar said the money stolen is N6.90 million instead of N6.82 million widely reported. Man In Prison For Trafficking 400g Of Indian Hemp

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Tuesday, remanded a 32-year-old man, John Adamu, in prison for allegedly trafficking 400 grams of hemp. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Justice Mohammed Aikawa remanded Adamu in Ikoyi Prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of drug trafficking. Aikawa consequently adjourned the case until Oct. 27 for the review of facts after which the court will pass its verdict. Earlier, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aerna, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 14 in Lagos. Aerna said that the defendant dealt in 400 grams of hemp which was classified as a restricted narcotics just like Heroine and Cocaine. He said the offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act. Cap N30 Laws of the Federation, 2004. NAN reports that an offender is liable to be imprisoned for life if found guilty and convicted of the offence.

President Muhammadu Buhari is meeting with the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors Forum behind closed doors. The meeting which is holding at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja started at about 11.37am. The Forum is headed by Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu. State Governors at the closed doors meeting included those of Lagos, Ekiti, Edo, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, Borno, Nasarawa, Yobe, Osun, Ogun, the Nation reports. Deputy governors at the meeting included those of Katsina and Kaduna. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha and the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, were also at the meeting.

Senator Ahmed Lawan has been elected the Senate President of the 9th Senate, as he defeated his opponent, Senator Ali Ndume. At the end of counting, Lawan polled 79 votes to defeat Ndume, who scored 28 votes. Lawan, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District, won the contest by a landslide as he got 73.83 percent of the vote cast by the lawmakers. Lawan’s victory was announced by the clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, who added that 107 senators cast their votes. World Bank - ‘Nigeria’s Fuel Subsidy Not Helping The Poor’

The Vice President for Sustainable Development, World Bank, Laura Tuck, who spoke at the ongoing World Circular Economic Forum in Helsinki, Finland, stated that Nigeria’s fuel subsidy is not helping the poor. Tuck who spoke on the theme ‘Scale it up! The Next Era of the Circular Economy’, revealed that the the continuous payment of huge sums of money as subsidies on fossil fuels has worsened resources consumption and increased greenhouse emission and pollution. “Strong evidence shows that a lot of countries put subsidy on fossil fuels, and these subsidies are insufficient to support the poor. Emir Sanusi To Be Suspended Over Alleged N3.4bn Misappropriation

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission has recommended the suspension of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, over the misappropriation of N3.4 billion between 2014 and 2017. According to the commission, the emir, whom they tagged principal suspect, should be suspended pending when investigations are concluded. The Emir and other suspects were suspended by a preliminary investigation, especially for obstructing investigation. The report indicated the spending of over N1.4 billion in various expenditures by the Kano Emirates as fraudulent and unappropriated, which contravenes the provisions of Section 120 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 8 of the Kano State Emirate Council Special Fund Law 2004. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission according to Punch, have written a letter to Mastercard and Visa to provide them with the past transactions on the credit cards that were found on Nigerian singer; Naira Marley . The EFCC revealed during the time an 11-count charge was filed against the “Issa Goal” crooner that the cards found on him were used for identity card theft and credit card fraud. Punch have now reported that the anti-graft agency have written letters to Mastercard and Visa Card to provide it with every detail on the last five transactions that were done with the cards that were found with the singer. The National Examination Council (NECO) has scrapped the use of scratch cards, for the conduct of its Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). Chairman of the NECO board, Abubakar Saddiq, confirmed this on Friday during the commissioning of the equipment and unveiling of 20 Toyota Hilux Vans purchased by the agency, in Minna, Niger State. Saddiq disclosed that they have procured 8,000 biometric machines, for registration of candidates during the conduct of its examinations. “In the last people have to buy scratch cards in order to register for NECO examination.
